Classification/Status:  Unclassified/Part-time/Non-exempt Temporary Employee. These temporary part-time employees work in a position which does not normally incur 1,000 or more hours per year in a specific task.

Job Summary

Under supervision of the Emporia Public Library Support Services Coordinator and/or Supervisor, performs basic customer service and clerical tasks.


Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists patrons in locating library materials.
  • Shelves and retrieves library materials.
  • Responds to patron information needs through the use of reference sources, library catalog, printed indexes, other library materials, and supervisors.
  • Operates and explains to patrons use of library equipment, machines and on-line catalog.
  • Answers phone and mail information needs and responds accordingly.
  • Maintains condition of library materials through book repair and processing new materials.
  • Assists patrons applying for library cards and the application process.
  • Performs basic circulation procedures to assist patrons checking out and returning library materials and related tasks.
  • Assists with story time and bulletin board preparation.
  • Locates reserve books on the shelf or through the circulation hold process.
  • Collects fines, reimbursements, and other library fees from patrons.
  • Retrieves book depositories as scheduled.
  • Assists the supervisor in charge of overdue materials with the overdue notification process.
  • Maintains appearance of browsing area, entryways, and lobby.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures.
  • Assists supervisors with special projects as assigned.



  1. Must be 16 years of age.
  2. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  3. Ability to interact with supervisors and work in a team-oriented environment.
  4. Access to reliable transportation.
  5. Ability to maintain effective relationships, with public, staff and library board.
  6. Ability to work within library’s policies, guidelines and procedures.
  7. Cheerful, conscientious and helpful attitude.  Likes working with the public.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  9. Available to work 10-20 hours per week, including evenings and weekends.
  10. Physically able to perform the job as outlined in the job duties and responsibilities of the job description.



  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Flexible scheduling.
